Foreword by Colin Dexter Over the years many wannabee writers have asked me to make some judgement upon their (occasionally, alas, very lengthy) literary efforts. Such a process, for me, has too often been a disappointing and dispiriting affair, since grammatical and syntactical competence has not infrequently been of ‘sub-primary’ standards – a bit like American mortgages, perhaps. What therefore surprised, indeed delighted me about the Oxford Writers’ Group’s Volume I was the high standard of technical expertise displayed therein; and – an even bigger surprise – was the regular display throughout the short stories of new-minted and entertaining ideas. Volume II Well, a common reference in the publishing world is the peril of ‘the second-book hurdle’, at which a good many runners in the Writers’ Stakes have come to grief, some of them incurring a plenitude of penalty points. Not so here! Our talented writers have collectively cleared the hurdle with stylish assurance. Fourteen of the two dozen or so Group members have submitted their stories, and they cover a splendidly wide range: from humour and satire to psychological insights; from history, old and new, to romance and reflection; and to add a dash of spice we find spookery and science fiction too. Short-story writing is a difficult art, and it is a remarkable achievement of these writers that after finishing one tale in their anthology, the reader – believe me – will be more than ready – eager, rather – to begin the next.
